How Sand Blocks: Drop Puzzle moves the puzzle from the gate to the source

Put Color Block Jam, Water Out Puzzle, and Sand Blocks: Drop Puzzle side by side, and there’s an interesting shift in where the puzzle actually happens.

🟥 Color Block Jam: the gate is the puzzle

Colored blocks move around a crowded grid and need to escape through matching gates around the board. The question is mostly “How do I clear a route to the right exit?”. It’s a spatial traffic puzzle: position, blocking, and routing are the challenge.

💧 Water Out Puzzle: add a material source to the loop

Water Out feels structurally close, but instead of simply sending blocks through colored exits, containers need to reach matching pipes, receive liquid, fill up, and clear. The familiar grid-and-gate structure remains, but now there’s an extra state in the loop: move → connect to source → fill → clear

You’re still solving space and routing, but the destination now does something before the block disappears.

🏝️ Sand Blocks: remove the gates and make the source dynamic

This is where things get more interesting. The movable trays (pits) remain on a grid, and matching material still fills them before they clear.

But the fixed gates/pipes are gone!

Instead, there are one or more sand pools above the board, and only the currently exposed sand at lower edge can flow into a matching tray positioned underneath.

👉 Now users have to think about:

  • What color is available now?
  • What gets exposed after it drains?
  • Which tray needs to be ready next?

So the puzzle is no longer just about managing space. It’s about managing space + sequence + a changing source state.

That one change creates a surprisingly different decision loop.

  • 🛣️ Color Block Jam makes you solve the route.
  • 🫗 Water Out adds the fill step.
  • ⌛ Sand Blocks makes the source itself part of the puzzle.

Sometimes a new puzzle formula doesn’t need a completely new interaction. Changing where the constraint lives can be enough. 👍
