Over the course of my market research work, I’ve been tracking how mobile casual/hybrid-casual game mechanics emerge, evolve, and branch into new variations. This timeline is a curated view of the patterns I’ve found most worth watching.
Aim or launch projectiles to knock down target structures through physics. Emerged from Toon Blast’s “Cannon Fest” LiveOps minigame.
Dynamic path/conveyors and loops with order, capacity and color rules. One of the more visible new puzzle directions that emerged in late 2025.
RelatedPixel Reveal / Art ClearJam + Loop SystemsClear arrows according to their direction and whether their path is blocked. A later directional-escape wave closely related to Tap Away-style logic.
Related3D Tap Away / Block RemovalMove colored blocks across a constrained grid and send them through matching color exits/gates. One of the defining hybrid-casual spatial puzzle waves of 2025.
Related3D Tap Away / Block RemovalTraffic / Car EscapeCollect target objects with a controllable hole under level objectives, limits or completion goals — a puzzle focused reframing of the familiar hole-collection interaction.
RelatedHole + Crowd CollectLoad color matched passengers into vehicles while managing a limited waiting area and departure order.
RelatedCrowd / Passenger Transport JamJam + Loop SystemsManipulate or inspect 3D objects while removing screws under spatial, color and capacity constraints.
RelatedScrew / Nuts & Bolts 2DScrew + Color / Screw JamThe classic water sort loop returning in more polished hybrid-casual packages with stronger meta, boosters, events and monetisation layers.
RelatedClassic Water / Ball SortRemove screws from layered boards and route them into color-matched trays or boxes while managing limited holding capacity.
RelatedScrew / Nuts & Bolts 2D3D Screw / Spatial ScrewPlace stacks of colored hex tiles so neighbouring colors automatically consolidate and clear or merge. Hexa Away is excluded because it is a directional escape puzzle rather than a stack-sort puzzle.
RelatedClassic Water / Ball SortUnscrew in dependency order to free the plates. The breakout of Q4 2023 and the seed of two later screw waves.
RelatedScrew + Color / Screw Jam3D Screw / Spatial ScrewShelf organisation meets triple matching. Quietly one of the longest lived formats of the period.
Related3D Object Triple MatchBox / Container Sort & JamTap or release block/low-poly characters into a limited tray, where matching groups clear. This is a tray management match puzzle.
Find three identical 3D objects in a cluttered scene or pile and clear them as a set.
RelatedGoods / Shelf SortTap directional blocks that can only leave when their path is clear. An important precursor to the later directional-escape wave.
RelatedArrow Escape / Arrow OutDraw physical barriers to protect a character from hazards. A huge 2022 wave that faded as fast as it rose.
Run a crowd of stickmen through gates that multiply or shrink it, then smash into the enemy crowd. The definitive hyper-casual wave of 2020 and 2021, and the last big runner before the genre cooled.
RelatedCrowd / Passenger Transport JamTransfer colored contents between containers until each one is a single color. The wave thrives around 2020-2022 and its descendants are still everywhere.
RelatedSecond-wave / Hybrid Water SortHexa Stack / Hexa SortRelease vehicles from a constrained parking layout by resolving blocking dependencies. Distinct from later tap-to-drive directional traffic-escape puzzles.
